Athletic Code of Conduct
We expect all athletes to be in compliance with the following standards:
- Meet all U.I.L. requirements as well as standards established by WISD to be eligible for participation. To include successfully completing off season, boot camp, and spring training. Exceptions to the rule include new to school, new to athletics, coaches discretion, etc.
- Athletes are expected to maintain a favorable attitude and proper conduct. He/she will refrain from making profane, insulting, threatening, or inflammatory remarks, or engaging in disruptive conduct.
- Athletes are expected to act beyond the standards of other students, as they are leaders of our school and community.
- Use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, or narcotics will not be tolerated. First offense may result in dismissal from the squad. Second offense will result in automatic dismissal pending investigation.
- Male athletes will adhere to a grooming code that is recommended by the Texas High School Coaches Association. Hair should be neat, off the collar, and out of the eyes. Facial hair will be groomed and maintained and no body jewelry may be worn during athletics or while attending WISD athletic events.
- Female athletes are not to wear body jewelry during any practice or contest.
- If an athlete is to miss a practice, meeting, or contest, he/she must notify the coach in advance. Failure to do so will result in some form of discipline (discretion of the Athletic Department).
- Respect the discipline management plan both in the classroom and in athletics. An athlete who is disciplined by the school’s administration for a disciplinary problem may be subject to further disciplinary action by the coach of his/her sport (up to the discretion of the Athletic Department).
- If an athlete begins a sport and quits, he/she will not be allowed to begin a second sport until the original sport has concluded. Any exception to this must be cleared through the Athletic Director.
- Hazing, initiation, or any “rights of passage” will not be allowed in any way, shape, or form. Any athlete involved in such actions will be disciplined by both the administration and the Athletic Department.
- Hazing can be defined as an “intentional or reckless act by one or more persons against a student that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated in affiliating with, holding office, or maintaining membership in an organization whose members include students at an educational agency.”
- Coaches of particular sports have the authority to enforce additional rules and regulations at their discretion.
The University High School Athletic Policies reflect our philosophy as we endeavor to help develop student-athletes into responsible and productive young men and women. Our policies will govern ALL athletes for the entire school year and during off-season/summer training activities. Failure to fulfill these expectations may result in disciplinary action. This could include removal from the team for the remainder of the season, or in more serious cases, removal from athletics for the remainder of the school year.
